Clip to ScrapBook
I do the paragraph-a-week with my 5th graders this year (as homework, after I modeled it at the beginning)- and now we've moved up to several paragraphs. I've definitely seen an improvement in their writing. I really think you have to give them a topic. Otherwise, you'll have too many that say, "I can't think of anything to write about." I do daily journaling, first thing in the morning, so that gives them practice getting their ideas down on paper. We also do a lot of peer editing (not on journals, but on other writing assignments), then I check them, and they rewrite them. I've had to get picky with their writing because they get careless if I don't. Now they're checking more.
