Have you tried talking to your class clown alone in a neutral way about the problem he is causing? I have found that if you can get the leader of your class on your side it really makes a big difference. I know that's easier
said than done. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago when I came in the middle of the year to a class. There was this one boy who was obviously the leader of the class. I really tried to buddy up with him to get him to like me and strangely it worked. I went to a seminar, How to Handle the Hard to Handle student and they advise to spend just a couple of minute a
day just talking to your problem student about anything besides school- sports, hobbies,tv, etc. Eventually, hopefully you will form a bond. It sounds like in your case, once you get him on your side the rest of the class will follow.
