Stop Sign! By Julie

I have 30, noisy 2nd graders and this technique seems to work well for me during Guided Reading/Centers. After much modelling and practice at the beginning of the year, I introduce the "Stop Sign". I make it sound very| serious. If a group or child is making too much noise during my reading group, I hand a BIG red Stop sign to the nearest child, NOT in group with me and I whisper the name of the child or group to hand it too. That child walks over to that group or child and hands it to them. This means they must STOP immediately and when they feel as though they can continue quietly, that group or person | | hands it back to me without saying a word. Everyone in the class can see the sign and I let them know it is NOT a good thing to receive this. If they receive it 3 times in 1 week, they can no longer participate in centers for that week or the next, depending on what day or your choice. Hope this helps... it works great for me and the kids do take it seriously. =)
