video tape By Jan

When I did my video, I did a plant unit. I had got enough little marigold plants for 2 partners to have one. I introduced the unit and discussd the different parts of the plants. I had the students measure the length of| the stem, the width of the flower head, and the length of the roots. They all had magnifying glasses to look at the roots and try to see the root caps on the end of the roots. They each had a paper to fill out with the measurements. It went very well. I did do it a couple of times because of the time restraints. I just told my students to act like they had never heard the lesson before | | and that if they were really good actors, we'd have a party. They were and we had a big party. One student had a problem of calling out answers so on the second taping, I just had him go into another classroom. I told them the video was costing me $175 (is that right? I can't remember.) and I didn't want to have to pay anomore than that because of bad behavior. This also went into a lesson about what is required of me as a teacher. So it did put a different perspective on the taping for them. By the way--I have first graders. My tape was sent in and I recieved my permament certification. I have always wondered if anyone even watched it. Could I have just sent in a blank tape as people I know did and get away with it? (probably not) I had heard the state was going to change the requirements. Too bad for me it wasn't soon enough. I don't think the tape could actually show anything. Who would be dumb enough to send in a tape where they looked like they didn't know what they were doing or had control of a class? My personal feelings are that NY just wants a little bit more money out of us. Good luck with your video.
