Along with the research idea

I agree that a research project would be a great way to go with this age group.

Along with their presentation groups could produce a power point presentation, they could create graphs, tables, drawings using other features
on the computer.

The nice thing about a research project is that it can incorporate a number of skills and software within it.

You might also be able to work with their classroom teacher on this as well - by having them do some of the writing and planning in their classroom so that they can use all of their computer class time to type what they have written, etc., Have them change

fonts, add graphics, perhaps even sound effects. And maybe a few could develop a web page based on their research (If you have publisher it has a good program for making web pages).
