Walter Dean Myers is a great author who writes about current realistic situations with African American characters. His book "Monster" is excellant, but may be a little controversial for lower grades. Gary Soto has written some great books with Hispanic American characters. You might try going to amazon.com and typing in the subject matter you are looking for in the search box. The ERIC web site also has a list of multicultural books withing their website.
