Pennies
By Moe

Clip to ScrapBook
Every year I do a money unit with my 2nd graders in conjunction with our President's Day theme. First we clean the pennies with a mixture of salt & vinegar. In just a few minutes they are sparkling! Then we use them for
the following activites:
*Roll the die, take that many pennies out of the "kitty". When you get to 10, come see the teacher & trade them for a dime. The first person in your group to get 10 dimes to trade for $1.00 wins (they always pout when they realize they don't get to keep the money, but they love the game)
*Estimation/Guesstimation: Guess how many drops of water will fit
on the surface of a dime, penny, quarter, etc. Most kids guess two or three, but when they pull out their eye droppers they are shocked to find the totals in the 40s, 50, and even 60s!
*Design a coin: I give each student a large paper circle and on it they must design their own new coin. Their faces go on one side and a special place (ie. their home) on the other. Year = the year they were born, and other fun personal facts on the coin. They even pick the value.

Good luck!
