behavoir and standards By Lynn

I have worked with students who are classified emotionally disturbed for over 18 years and just because we are trained to deal with these behavoirs, does not make it any easier to meet the academic standards, especially when| the legislators/the board of regents and those in the position of power have no idea what those of us in the trenches deal with everyday. It is very difficult to teach reading, math, science, etc to a classroom of students who have been sexually abused, live without running water, are in and out of psychriatric hospitals, only get regular meals at school, have medication issues,... | | and even harder to hear from the "powers that be" that you are not doing the best you can educationally for these children, because they still failed the 4th grade ELA. I am not saying that it is not hard for the regular education classroom to have to deal with a special ed. student and you are right, these teachers do need more training. I am just saying that special education teachers are having more and more pressure put on them to meet the standards too.
