Grades By Kathy

I teach grades 3-4. I record a grade for math every day just as a way to make sure everyone gets all their lessons in. (It's just easier for me to record it that way.) They get a standard 10 points if the assignment is| done and corrected. I will take off points if they miss a lot, but generally they get the full 10 points just for doing it. Saxon Math (which we are using) tests every five lessons so we generally have several tests each quarter. In the other subjects I try to have 1-2 assigments I record each week and 2-3 tests per quarter so their grades will reflect what they are doing. A lot | | of our work is cooperative learning or things I spot check and send home.In social studies and science a lot of our work is "hands-on" or cooperative learning groups so we generally have 6-10 grades and one test for those subjects. (I alternate teaching science and social studies each quarter so we can concentrate on what we are learning.) I have GradeQuick on my computer so it's pretty easy to do grades because they are all there at the end of the quarter. I send home grade sheets at least once mid-term and at the end of the period. This quarter I'm going to aim for every three weeks--which seems about right at this age level. I want them to become aware of grades, but it's learning, improving, and doing your best that I emphasize in my classroom.
