Writer's Workshop
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Renee,
I think you need to start with the routines, procedures and heart of writer's workshop. The first book to get is 'The Art of Teaching Writing' by Lucy McCormick Calkins. It is in its second edition and published
by Heinemann. Also, the New Zealand Ministry of Education has a book called, 'Dancing With the Pen' that you can get from R.C. Owen publishers. The National Council of Teachers of English (ncte.org) is another wonderful source of information. Other great professionals on the subject of writing include: Regie Routman, Donald Graves, Donald Murray, Ralph Fletcher, Georgia Heard,
Shelly Harwayne (to name a few)...Go to Heinemann or Stenhouse publishers for some of the best. For writing assessment, try the Developmental Writing Assessment published by Pearson Learning. It's time consuming, but it will really give you a handle on what your kids have under control and what their next steps as writers would be. If you have other specific questions regarding writing, please post again or email...we're happy to help. ;-D
