division with remainders
By teach6

Clip to ScrapBook
I am not currently teaching math, so it has been a couple of years since I taught this, but a couple of things I have done....
get a pack of oreo cookies...divide them up amongest the group to first identify what a remainder
is.( not enough cookies for everyone...just enough left for an ice cream shake.)
once you get that, when you actually get to the paper pencil stuff, cover up all the numbers that are under the division sign...uncover one at a time to see if it is divisible by 2....I use the division family to teach the steps to division...D=divide which is Dad, M= multiply which is Mom, S=subtract
which is sister, C= check to see if number subtracted is less than that you are dividing by which stands for Cat, and then BD = which is bring down or Brother DUH.....I always tell them I can say Brother Duh! because I had 4 brothers who used to tease me. I list these letters on the board with a big arrow to signify you start over once you get to BD. Then I uncover the next number underneath the divide sign and repeat the whole process. Then if there are more numbers I uncover the next, etc.
I hope this makes sense...Hard to explain on email. Good Luck.
