Don't fret over this By Relax

The para was out of line. It's as simple as that. Paras are there to "assist" students and teachers, yes substitute teachers as well. Your position is to take over the role of the regular teacher for the day not to just be another body in the room. If you want quiet...then that's exactly what you should expect, even if the regular teacher would permit talking...the fact is, when you sub...it's "your" class for the day. Don't allow paras to intimidate you. If you do you will undoubtedly have them feeling they have every right to walk all over you and it will most likely give the students the impression | | that you are not in charge. I don't mean to bash all paras as I've worked with some terrific ones...but I've also had to put a couple in their place...and that isn't a comfortable thing to do -- but necessary at times and not to be mean and overbearing...but because their place is not to take over the class... that's the substitute's place...Oh....and this is coming from someone who once worked as a para...Good Luck -- Stand strong -- progress confidently.
