Retention
By Connie

Clip to ScrapBook
Has your principal given you any input on what to say to the child's parents? You might want to ask him/her on what to say.
In my 20+ years I have only retained one student and double promoted another all in the same
year.
The mother of the child who was retained came back a few years later and told me that retention was the best thing that could have ever happened to her child. She said that at first there were lots of tears. Over the years after the retention the child's academics were so much better. He became happier with himself and did so much better in school.
There are good things that
can happen with retention. Being behind in grade level work can only deflate a child's self esteem. He/she should be able to have more successes with repeating a grade.
I hope this all makes sense. I am a little tired from all the report card routines right now.
Good luck with whatever you say to the parents.
Let us know.
