using manipulatives
By D

Clip to ScrapBook
I learned this from a 4th grade teacher where I work. You can make a division problem into a story using base 10 blocks. She gives each table a cup filled of (ones) cubes. Each child take a handful. Then she puts a problem
on the board like: 25 / 5 Then she would say show me a story. Each of the kids would count out 25 cubes and put them into groups of 5. The "story" would go like this. If I had 25 cubes and I said put them into group of 5 how many groups would I have? By using the mainpulatives they would see that they have 5 groups of 5. This also works with remainders. If the problem was
27 / 5 The story would be:
If I had 27 cubes and wanted to put them into groups of 5, I would have 5 groups of 5 with 2 left over or remainder of 2. Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope this helps. Good Luck.
