Paragraphs!
By Amanda K.

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm using the Steve Dunn writing program this year... it's pretty intense, but the kids are NOT writing in paragraphs, particularly not at this point in the year. My kids just need to turn out a good story with beginning,
middle, and end. I like for them to be able to write at least 6-7 sentences by the end of the year. About 20 percent of them don't make that mark. Most of my kids can pump out about 4-5 sentences right now, polishing their work through the stages of the writing process. In order for a first grader to get a maximum score on our district writing assessment, they have to write around
7-10 sentences without paragraphing. I think first graders have enough to worry about with just learning to write cohesive stories without worrying about paragraphs, too. That should come later, after mastery of the basic writing skills.
