Vocabulary
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Kimberly,
If you did only a word a day...children would be exposed to a minimum of words by the end of their school career...try lots of reading to them, reading with them and independent reading at their level. Ask them to be on the lookout for new and interesting words to list in their reader's response logs. Have them bring their lists to literature conversations/guided reading. Don't preteach vocabulary, let your students find unusual and unknown words and predict their meanings based upon their use in the book. From there, if they don't have a sense of the meanings during your group discussions, have a dictionary handy to look up tricky words. There were some articles in Reading Teacher on Vocabulary. Best of luck. ;-D
