IEP Minutes By Michelle

Ok, you have two issues here. One is the IEP minutes. We don't account for individual subjects on the IEP, just total minutes in each setting. So, sounds like this differs by state. I would suggest writing what you think| is correct along with an explanation of what the child will actually be doing and faxing to the director to check it prior to your meeting. That's what I did when they changed how our minutes were to be done this year for therapy services. She appreciated that I took the extra time. Your second issue is that IDEA requires that children with disabilities receive the same amount of | | instructional time as typical students -- unless there is a specific issue for an individual student. It is not legal for them to get the kids to school late or leave early. Those other little things that come up -- are they a problem for regular ed also? If so, it isn't an issue you need to worry about as much on your IEPs. However, I would document carefully. I just jot notes in my lesson plan book. (5th grade class play, Special assembly for fund raiser, Special assembly with principal re: playground behavior, Lunch served 25 minutes late, etc.) That way, if a parent questions anything . . . If there are interruptions because your class is special ed, then you need to document and deal with them. We used our documentation to justify refusing to sub for other teachers, pull extra duty, etc. One of my old principals actually expected to cut my instructional time with a group so that I could relieve a regular ed teacher from lunch duty two or three days a week! You are responsible for providing the services. Talk to your director of special ed if necessary.
