I smile because I am DROWNING in spelling activities Since I just took over this class in Dec., I'm trying one thing at a time to see what will capture their attention.

For this first week, I wanted to give the kids
a method that would help them get the word spelled correctly when they did their HW, so they would have a better chance at success on the test. They LOVE pyramid spelling.

I have found that when my kids can succeed at something as simple as doing their spelling HW (which helped them do well on the test), then they are more motivated to try something more challenging, such as write out

sentences with the words.

In fact, we did this in class with the first 5 words. One student started the first sentence with the first word, and then the another student added to that sentence with the next word, and so on. We came up with a paragraph that made sense and was hilarious! This motivated them to create their own paragraphs for HW.

That's why I like 6th grade--they're so willing to make me laugh! They have great humor!

I teach kids who have very little home support (absent parents, English lang. barriers, illiteracy, etc.), so I'm working towards helping them take personal responsibility for their own learning. Goal-setting has been the answer for me.
