curriculum

Clip to ScrapBook
The curriculum guidelines for my grade level are very easy for most 6 year olds to achieve. I usually go above the levels because many students are ready. If a student cannot meet the basic standards then they need to repeat
the grade. I have retained students that cannot count... never mind add and subtract. They did not know the letters of the alphabet... let alone read. Another year made the world of difference. They had self esteem because they no longer felt stupid. It wasn't anyone's fault they were not ready yet. I taught them the second time around and they were different kids. I don't see
retention as being a negative in most cases. What's the rush?

In years past some kids were skipped up a level because they knew the material and were mature enough. Was that a bad thing?? We never do that anymore.
