Most towns and cities have Native Cultural Centers or here in Alberta Native Friendship Centers. I would check to see if there are any located in your area and start there.

Most Native Americans are pretty much everyday people like the rest of us and I'm sure wouldn't mind receiving a letter from you. In fact many enjoy sharing their culture and history.

Other places to check would be museums that feature Native-American sections - I know in Denver Colorado and in many places in Colorado for example there are quite a few places where Native people perform dances or have displays, etc.,
