With my students, I personally do not give below a 50. I agree with another poster that it gets them in so deep, it is hard to recover. I do not lie as some have put it by changing a 18 or 33 to a 50 but I grade it where a 50 is the lowest possible points. I don't think giving a 22 serves ANY purpose but putting them so low, they can't recover. An F is an F to my kids. They just see the F and know they failed. Numbers mean nothing to them so this does not serve as a motivator! How about grading "on a curve". Is this not lying too? Just wondering. I hope all works out for you.
