I teach my kids that big words usually have more than one vowel and that to make reading these big words easier they are divided into parts that we call syllables. I then teach them to count the vowels and then look for the syllables. For example if we had the word picnic I'd have a student come up and mark the vowels with a V (under the vowels) then we'd count them....and then I'd explain how to divide into syllables....does that help at all? it seems so simple when I do it but typing it here seems like I'm not doing a good job explaining it to you....
