failing
By Colleen

Clip to ScrapBook
Now is the time to "have the talk" with the parents. They may have been toying with the idea and they need to hear it from you. First grade is a good time to hold students back. It doesn't mean their child is "failing"
but not yet ready for the material presented. I sometimes feel that teaching first grade is like potty training. If they are ready then they will grasp the material. If the students are behind in math and reading then a repeat of the year is the best way to go. If the student is low in only one area then perhaps a learning disablility is what needs to be checked out. I know it is hard
to break the news but once you do you will feel that you have done the right thing. If the parents are not receiptive to this then you can at least feel the ball is in their court now. Good luck.
