Have you tried class meetings
By Cheryl

Clip to ScrapBook
My fourth graders were reportedly so much worse in third. They are still a handful but I know that they did make significant progress last year when they instituted class meetings. We have the good fortune of having a social
worker in the school. He doesn't do class meetings as part of his role in the school, but these kids were so difficult that he volunteered to organize weekly meetings. They helped this group tremendously. I run the meetings this year without the social worker and it's nice to see them solve their own problems. I know that last year the issues were so bad that the social worker
had them meet measurable goals. Their goals were related to fighting at recess. They chose one recess and figured out a way to measure the success. When they met their objective they had a pizza party. Good luck to you. It becomes so difficult to teach when the kids behavior gets in the way. And if you are interested in class meetings there are books that help you with the format. I have some titles somewhere if you're interested.
