grading
By ~Lily~

Clip to ScrapBook
I don't give a 20 then display it as 50. I just don't take off points to where it would ever reach below a 50. 50 is failing and yes, I do have third graders that get these grades on papers and they are crushed. These
students try (some harder than others) but when they are worried about if they are going home or DHS tonight, or if they are going to have to hide in a closet because daddy came home drunk and beat mommy up, they are just trying to survive and studying is NOT priority to them. Maybe you don't work in such an environment, but I do! My motto is "You can't always treat each one equal but
you can always treat each one fair!" I get to know my students and their families. It breaks my heart to know what they go through. I am the only constant in many of their lives and I'm not in this to fail kids! Yes, some do receive 50/F because they have not put forth the effort and maybe didn't care enough. But I don't have to make it where they are in such a hole that they can't see the way out! Many of them already have strikes against them. I am very careful to document modifications which I do make for my students, resource or not. There are some that are not resource but clearly can not work up to other's standards.

If I have a test/or paper for a grade that has 10 questions, I don't take 10 points off for each one. I take off 5 points each. I can't justify a third grader missing two problems/questions and them making a C. That stinks!

These still are my thoughts. We can just agree to disagree.
