I am not sure if this totally fit the bill, but...
Get a large glass jar-cafeteria pickle jars work well. Layer in 1/3 honey, 1/3 vegetable oil and 1/3 colored water. Wait until the the liquids settle into layers. Assemble a large collection of small objects of various weights and materials. Have the kids predict which are sinkers and floaters and which layer they will float in. Dense liquids like honey can make a heavy item a floater.
