Congratulations on your good placement! 14 kids shouldn't be too bad and first graders are great! What I learned in my program was to use realia to reach children with special needs. Bring in pictures, objects, things they can relate to, have them doing instead of listening, and most importantly try to use all 7 of Gardner's intelligences because it really does help.
