first days

Clip to ScrapBook
I am assuming that you are starting a new school year with 3rd graders? Is this the beginning of a new school year for you? I just returned after Christmas break...but I'll tell you what I do the first few days of a school
year.

I have the students create a job card. I generally have a daily helper who does each days jobs....calendar, lunch count, etc. I have each student write their name and decorate a 4 x 6 card and put them in a pile. Each day I pull the helper of the day to the front.

I always do some sort of cooperative activity. Someyears I'll have a puzzle for the kids to put together

together, other years smaller group activities. (Each student may have a piece of a letter of the word cooperation and they have to find their match...or a class size picture puzzle that each student has a piece of...this year we did a U.S. flag)

I generally do a timed math test...just for fun. and take a writing sample. Have SSR time (silent reading) and practice freezing when I say so.

good luck and have fun!
michele
