Middle School By Renee

I live in GA and right now Middle School is 7th & 8th grade but next year they are talking about adding 6th grade. This is my first year teaching and I specifically chose middle school because I felt the children would be| more of a challenge. They are!!! LOL! I love them all but I teach behavior disorders and although we generally get along well, they do get upset with me and with other students at times. I am currently in the classroom by myself without a para pro. My background is not in education, I am a mental health counselor. I have been trained in prevention. Someone else said that it wasn't | | the middle school kids, it was the admn. I totally agree! Because of my preventive techniques and my desire to deesculate children before they engaged in physical altercations, I have been critized for "babying" my students. I've only had 2 fights (I teach in an inner city, Title I school) which is exceptional with these children. What bothers me the most is that it is other special education teachers who give me the hardest time!!! I get so angry I could scream sometimes. I love these kids and will work with them if they work with me. They are all more intelligent that they will admit and are so capable but for various reasons make bad choices and don't fulfill their potentials. I will remain at this school next year unless the BOE has different plans.
