Shared Writing, first grade
By Amanda

Clip to ScrapBook
Katelyn, I have found shared writing to be a VERY strong influence on my children's writing. In the past 2 months, my children have taken off. First, we brainstormed ideas of things to write about, put it on chart paper
and we leave it posted in the classroom at all times. EVERY DAY before we begin independent writing, we look at that list of things to write about; one student then chooses a topic, then another chooses a sentence to write about that topic. We break that sentence apart and write it on chart paper as a class. "OK, now what's our first word again? What kind of letter do we need to begin
our sentence? Can anyone write that word, or part of that word?" The children take turns writing words, parts of words, or even just letters. They all feel successful. Anyone can e-mail me about this if you'd like. It REALLY works.
