I put my second graders into 2 football teams. They select a team name and colors. Each child then makes a large construction paper football jersey with a number and their name. For every hour read at home students bring| in a paper football and earn a point for their team. Extra points are earned by telling about a newpaper article that they bring in on the day they earn a point. Footballs are given to team captains and we calculate each team's score each day. We become very good at couting by 6 or 7 and 2 digit addition as our scores become bigger and bigger. Team scores are displayed on a football field | | on a bulletin board, jerseys go on the back of their desk chairs. Each child must bring in 4 footballs and earn 1 extra point to attend our superbowl party on the last Friday of January. Each student calculates his/her points earned for the month on the last day. We have hot dogs, popcorn, and pop and play relay games or snow football on the playground. I've been doing this for many years and former students still tell me that the superbowl party in my class was awesome.
