SOrry I havent' replied sooner - lost my internet service for a while. I have pockets taped to the wall in each center. I don't write down everything they do. but i do write own things they master, are struggling wtih, things they discover, when a goal has been met, etc. put it on a notecard and drop it in teh pocket of the center. I go through the cards at a later date and file them into their portfolio. I also take photos and work samples during this time. My kids pick what center they will go to and how long they need to be there. for references - NAEYC puts out a great video for first grade | | teachers i can't remember the name but go to www.naeyc.org Ideas from YOUNG CHILDREN magazine can be helpful. Developmentally appropriate practice by Sue Bredekamp - a book called centers (i'll look up the author.) It's really a way of changing the way you teach, look at and value your students. They will need to make choices for teh test of their life and need to develop a foundation for it in the classroom.
