Saxon and testing
By Kathy

Clip to ScrapBook
I find too that in the first few grades the students who do Saxon do have trouble with the tests--particularly in computation. In later grades (starting with fourth), I think they do better.

Saxon seems "behind" in some areas such as the ones mentioned, but "ahead" in others. I taught another third grade math series for years and we never touched some of the things they learn in Saxon. (Such as squares, square roots, congruent lines, etc.) Unfortunately these concepts are not in the tests!

I teach 3-4 and they start doing a lot of heavy computation in fourth and seem to do fine with it. So they do get to it--just not as soon as other series--which is probably better developmentally. I also enjoy all the "hands-on" approaches.
