I also had shapes on the floor. I made them about 12" square (at least), in a variety of colors. I then ran them through our school laminator, leaving about 1 foot between each shape. I taped the plastic runner to the floor in my room. I used this "shape runner" as a tool in my classroom for lineing up (no more gangs at the doorway), sorting by colors, getting into line, etc. and at the same time they were learning shapes & colors. While waiting for others to get on coats, etc. we would ask what shape (or color) they were standing on, etc. Many teachers in the school commented on it.
I have also found that mnay of my students would confuse triangle with rectangle, both of them having that "angle" ending. I draw a triangle & point out that triangles have 3 sides (tri) and come to a point like a mountain. I then draw a stick figure of a man at the base of one side and say "He's TRYING to climb up the side of the triangle mountain." and make my fingers walk up the side of the figure. This is repeated as needed, and soon all they need is a cue of walking fingers to remember trying to walk up the triangle mountain. Eventually the cues are faded.
For your student I don't really see a problem "piggy backing" learning shapes by using the colors she already knows. Eventually, of course, you'll change the colors of the shapes.
