Paddles
By KC

Clip to ScrapBook
Back in the "dark ages" when I first started teaching we used ping pong paddles. They worked pretty well for first graders--am not sure how they would do for the older kids. (Though I can't imagine spanking teenagers anyway.)

I
did paddle about half dozen kids in my first nine years of teaching. (First grade) Each time it was for deliberate disobedience or disrespect with a child who was showing a pattern of this type of behavior. When teaching first grade I often felt I must be the first person in a child's life who had told them "no" and meant it.

Even though I never liked spanking, I did feel

it was necessary at times. The strange thing is that when I moved to a new state (California) and spanking wasn't an option it was amazing how I could find other things that worked.

I haven't spanked a student in over 15 years and can hardly imagine that I thought it a viable option once! There are times though when I wonder if a good spanking would help one of my challenges!
