I have actually learned the opposite...you can go crazy trying to get the students to do what you "demand" of them. I have found that getting the routine off to a good start is essential and control? putting your foot down is ok, but after that, a smile and asking students about themselves in a STRUCTURED setting or ice breaker will help students listen and respect you more and thus want to impress you rather than do what you say out of fear. really tall? I try and bend down to their desk level so as not to dominate them with height. For me, teaching is about passing on human traits that are essential in life and the workforce. Would you work for a boss that treated you rudely? No way! Try natural consequences instead...good luck.
