Maybe I was seeing something not there but I do feel that an attack was coming on because I wasn't saying what some want to hear. I do stand by my statement that it is the teacher's responsibility to teach the children what| they need to know to be successful in school and that when the children leave each day that the time should be spent with their families just being a family. Good grief, these kids leave their homes very early in the morning and don't get home until 8 hours and sometimes later. Parents work all day to pay their bills and are tired too. What is wrong with expecting children to be able |
| to go home and just relax and spend positive time with their families? I worked at a learning center that has research that says that all we had to do was spend 5 to 10 minutes working on basic math facts a few days a week and they will learn them. We didn't send the assignment home for parents and kids to do together but used the first minutes of our time together working on them. Why can't teachers spend a small amount of class time working on math facts instead of sending it home as homework? I know so many teachers that use morning sheets and never take a grgade on them and never even look at them! Why can't that time be spent on math facts? Team them up! And the drills are excellent tools to see what these kids do know because they won't have time to do their little tricks to solve a math fact. If you gave them all the time in the world to do them then they will use their mind cheats to solve them and that isn't what we want them to do now is it? We want them to know these facts so well that they can solve those problems without having to spend time using their fingers or whatever method they have to get around memorizing them. Now my beliefs are based on tried and proven programs used by well known and highly paid learning centers. It is simply done, no fuss, and the children do great! And as far as offending me? You didn't ! I'm just tired and the holiday stress is getting to me! I'm seriously going to take care of Christmas during the summer break so I can sit back and actually enjoy the holidays without all the rush and shopping! I'll go back and read the posts again tomorrow after I've had a grreat night sleep and I'm sure I'll see it all different. We'll see! Did I mention that we are also remodeling an old country kitchen? Very bad timing! Happy holidays to all
