I can certainly relate to your situation. I have a 3/4 combination and am struggling with the reality of low readers, upcoming assessments, and little help. I have to split my students into two groups, because of grade levels. I try to use the basal for about 3 weeks, then I teach a novel (1-2 weeks), then back to the basal. My novel studies are done in a literature circle format. I have at least one reading activity each morning that the children do together, a short story, poem, recipe, or content area reading, that we discuss together. I do a lot of reading instruction during science and social studies lessons also. And, I read aloud to my kids every day. I think that is SO important! I do have some higher order thinking skills question stems that I use when discussing reading selections with the children. I'll be glad to send those to you if you would like. I know it's tough to teach reading skills, especially when all of your students are on different levels. Hang in there! And let me know if I can be of any help!
