Melting Pot vs. Salad Bowl
By JOSE

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi! Linda,
Even though your idea for a "melting pot" might sound good as you approach it, it is not the reality of this country. The reality is that we do not melt into each other. If you visit New York City, as an example,
we still have Little Italy, China Town, Harlem and Spanish Harlem. In reality, these "barrios" have not "melted" into one; they have retained their customs, traditions and cultural values. Therefore, teaching a child that we become like another is for that child to learn that his/her background is not important or of value. The "salad bowl" at least gives this child the opportunity
to accept who she/he is and then be able to embrace the dominant culture of the Anglo-American (which is what the bowl represents and what originally scholars believed we melted into. I hope this clarifies any doubts!
