Try books that are very practical, as well. What I mean is that if she's going to be thrust into that classroom in a few weeks, she'll need books that she can use with her class right away. Try finding a book with activities on her social studies theme, or any other book with sheets she can just photocopy and use for a lesson in her class. Also, what about a magazine subscription? The Mailbox and Scholastic Instructor are good ones. Finally, I would say a gift certificate to the teacher supply store would be good, so she can pick out her own books and supplies.
