Jonathan Kozol is a sociologist whose focus is on inner city children (primarily education). My background is social work and before I started teaching at the inner city school where I now work, I read quite a few of his books. The first book he wrote that got attention was "Death at an Early Age" in which he talks about failing inner city school (and family) systems and what they do to children. He did a follow up book too, called "Savage Inequalities" where he follows up on "Death..." In that book he talks to kids from East St. Louis, Chicago, New York, and a few other cities about what their schools are like, what resources they have, their challenges, etc. He has written other books too about similar topics and they are all excellent. I highly recommend them.

On the lighter side, there is a book called "Educating Esme" which is a book written from the diary of a first year inner city school teacher.
