This is an overview of my reading sequence using the reading basal: Day 1-preview story w/picture walk, introduce or pick out needed vocabulary words, record and make predictions, Day 2- teacher read aloud of text, make and change predictions, ask implicit and explicit questions, pull out skills, model strategies (decoding words, think alouds), Day 3- students buddy read text with a partner, complete story map and summarize story using the map, Day 4- students listen to story on CD or tape and complete a comprehension activity (retell, turn story into a play, Venn diagram comparing this story and a previously read story, cubing, etc), do a dramatic reading or other activity, Day 5 Teacher conducts extension activity with the story (as a group rewrite the ending or a to be continued version, tell the story from a different story's point of view). In addition to this I do daily word work w/words spelling words pulled from the story, have daily SSR time during which I have students read to me. I also meet w/students in small groups to work on needed mini-lessons and extend or reteach needed skills and strategies (done mostly as a guided reading group). I have used this sequence successfully w/students from grades 1-4, including an inner city school. Hope this helps...Good luck!
