If you liked Holes you might also enjoy Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It is set in the future though you don't know that. Third children have been banned by the gpvernment and can be killed if caught. Luke is a third child who discovers other third children. It is a little slow at first but at the end you can't put it down. My kids loved it so much they ran out and got the sequel.
