Why not "adopt" elderly persons from the local nursing home? You could have your students make cards and maybe you could help them make an easy treat to take to them. (Just keep in mind that many may be diabetic and some will have a hard time chewing hard items.) If they are starting to read, then have them share a short story. They could sing some of their Christmas songs too. This is something they could do throughout the year. I think this is an awesome gift to the elderly and doesn't cost much--just some time.
