Buddy Reading
By Susan Donnelly

Clip to ScrapBook
Good Morning
I hope Im not too late
Good luck and I know you will be pleased
I hope that these suggestions help
1st I begin with a democratic class management
respect the rights of others
no ridicule
for mistakes
use library voices quiet voices and model behaviors daily
use hand signals if noise levels are too high (I too teach 5th grade)
model daily until students internalize. Please note : I used "Classrooms that Work by Cunningham I believe.

next,I set up reading logs only to keep students focused and have inital guided reading comprehension questions at their desks

:i.e. characters ,setting, plot, mood, whats favorite part, examples of these, for summary statements and # of pages read ie: pages 7- 10, etc. YEs I let them take these home to complete too and parents sign these Reading logs
next I have books available on students' desks for directly after recess or lunch
Partner Readers usually are paired with average to above average reader and struggling reader this works if climate in class is character ed driven and modeled daily for this procedure
Or partner readers are reading a book of interest
This has truly worked for me and I monitor and walk around to see if they are pretending or engaged tho, after a time You will see that they will become more self-directed and model all the behaviors you will need for successful partner readers. I ,also, use read alouds to get the students started in various books and think alouds; my reactions to what I am reading at the time this is whole class tho.
I dont use partner reders daly but 2 or 3 times a week works but we read daily if struggling readers are reading picture books I'm delighted I dont read as the students read because the students will leave the task and move to off- tasks behaviors and ususally its 15- 20 mins at 1st In time they will graduate to 40 mins but not at 1st Happy Reading
Have A pleaseant holiday season
Sincerely
Susan Donnelly
