Your input as a teacher is helpful. I'm sure all of us who sub. have dealt with this type of thing many times.

One has to develop broad shoulders but I also draw the line with older kids (I consider 4th grade on up to be
older) on outbursts against me and classmates. More than once I've told kids coming in to complain about fights, etc. that they need to check it at the door, Of course, if I witness it or it gets reported by another teacher/aide then I'll deal with it.

When I started sub'ing I was surprised at how kids can gang up on each other - thus, I take supposed witnesses (other students) to an

incident with some skepticism.

The first couple of times I tried to investigate a reported incident back in the classroom and all it does is chews up valuable class time. If the 2 or 3 combatants try to renew the battle in class they are moved to neutral corners. My bottom line is I will not tolerate disruptions once we begin a lesson.

Best, Ken in WI
