Christmas
By Rebecca

Clip to ScrapBook
In her post, Rachel laments the loss of Christmas from our schools and writes that Christmas is the "major holiday of winter". I know I'm nitpicking on words here, but Christmas is NOT the "major holiday of winter" - it's
the DOMINANT holiday of winter because of advertising, excessive gift-giving, the USA-ization of the holiday and all the more modern aspects of Christmas.

Sure, Christianity may have the most followers in number, but to many, many, many people, Christmas is not the major holiday. I love Christmas traditions as much as any person who grew up in the US, but in a global society like we

live in, it's natural that Christmas would begin to blend in with the other winter celebrations - especially in our increasingly diverse schools. The point of the other posters is that we can celebrate all of the relevant holidays of our students and educate them to the varieties of ways people honor certain times of the year.
