Merit pay
By Jade

Clip to ScrapBook
I know of one district in NJ where they have instituted merit pay for principals, but I haven't heard of it for teachers. This is a very affluent district and the parents demand a lot from the schools anyway. The sad thing
is that a lot of the principals have recently resigned because of the fear that if their schools don't do as well as some higher being says they should, they are not going to get pay raises. As a teacher in an urban area of the state, I don't think that the merit pay system is fair. I consider myself an excellent teacher and I love what I do, but sometimes it is not possible to have
100% of my students pass the state test. People are always quick to judge the teachers and criticize us, but I can only do so much with what I am given. Is is fair to hold me accountable for kids that can't pass a 4th grade standardized test when they come to me reading on a 1st grade level? Luckily I don't think our union would ever accept merit pay in our contract.
