subbing
By Jami

Clip to ScrapBook
I always leave a note for the teacher, and I always leave names. It depends on what was done through the day. If there is a student who gives me a tough time all day, or there is a lot of misbehavior, I always leave names.
It may help the teacher in case she needs to keep track of a student's behavior, for example. I am always careful about how I phrase things. I wouldn't say "Johnny was driving me crazy with his talking!" but "Johnny had a little difficulty staying seated and raising his hand."
I also name students who were helpful to me. I always give a positive compliment to the class, even if
they were the worst. I FIND something to say!
As far as being silent for attention, I usually stand at the front of the class, and say something like "Ok, whenever you're ready, I'll start talking." Usually, that works. It's rare if it doesn't. If it's a real tough class, I might say "Ok, every minute I wait will be taken from recess (or free time, etc.)
I've survived almost 3 years of subbing!
