I have a few ideas. Hope they help. Since the theme is newspapers, one thing you could do is use cartoons that have no captions or you could white out the captions. then they can write their own.
Another idea is to
have them write a 5W poem:
who Ex. the children
(did) what looked out the window
where in their bedroom
when on Christmas Eve
why because they were
for Santa
I also had my students use a headline and turn it into a complete sentence.
This was a family project and they had to underline the subj. and pred., circle the simple subj., etc.
You may also check with your local newspaper. We had a family night and the NIE (newspaper in ed.)
came and did activities with our parents.
